If you watched the first season of And Just Like That and felt an enormous emptiness that Kim Cattrall‘s character Samantha Jones was not a part of the cast, you’re not alone. The character was an integral part of Sex and the City, but she was essentially written off the reboot, only appearing in text communications to Sarah Jessica Parker‘s Carrie Bradshaw.
In Season 2 though, Cattrall will return for one single scene, in which she speaks on the phone with Carrie. We don’t know the context of that phone conversation, but there had better be some classic Samantha one-liners and dirty wordplay in there if we’re only getting one scene from Cattrall.
Variety reports that Cattrall filmed the scene alone back in March without interacting with any of the other stars in the cast or with showrunner Michael Patrick King. She did, however, rely on Sex and the City‘s costume designer Patricia Field to outfit her, despite the fact that Field does not typically work on And Just Like That.
It’s a small detail, but for a show so known for its fashion, that is indeed a flex.
Cattrall has not officially commented on her return to the show, but she did explain her absence from it, saying last year, “I was never asked to be part of the reboot. I made my feelings clear after the possible third movie, so I found out about it like everyone else did — on social media.”
On the new series, Samantha’s absence is explained by her choice to move to London. Estranged from Carrie after a falling out, the two women reconnected via text… which has turned into a phone call. (“Star 69? Honey, I’ll show you who’s a star at 69.” Sorry, just talking about Samantha Jones makes by brain turn to sex pun salad.)
In response to audiences who crave more Samantha, Cattrall said in 2022, “I’ve come to the conclusion that really the greatest compliment I could have as an actor is to be missed.”
And Just Like That… Season 1 is now streaming on Max.
