This 165-year-old West Village townhouse — designed by the architect of St. Patrick’s Cathedral — has found a buyer.
The historic West 10th Street “Gold Coast” home, designed by James Renwick Jr., is now in contract. It was last asking $22.5 million, down from its $29.5 million ask in 2021. The six-story home is around 9,000 square feet.
At 22 feet wide, it features seven bedrooms, six baths and three powder rooms. It’s one of 10 homes on Renwick Row.
The sellers are Elissa Kramer, a retired radiologist, and Jay Newman, a former senior portfolio manager at Elliott Management and author of the 2022 novel “Undermoney.” (Hedge funder and Putin foe Bill Browder, author of “Red Notice,” called “Undermoney” a “gripping thriller that takes you into the world of New York hedge funds, Russian money launderers and DC power politics.”)
Newman paid $2.68 million for the property in 1999, according to property records. Back then, it was divided into six floor-through apartments.
It has since been renovated and restored, featuring six woodburning fireplaces with original marble mantels — and new or restored crown moldings, ceiling medallions and mahogany doors inside along with brick and brownstone on the exterior.
The home also features an elevator, a chef’s kitchen, a dining room overlooking the garden, a wet bar hidden behind paneled doors, a large living and entertaining space, along with a backyard and a roof garden with skyline views. There’s also a balcony off the living room, which boasts floor-to-ceiling windows.
Details include a central staircase illuminated by a top-floor skylight, 13-foot-plus ceiling heights, arched windows and hardwood floors. One of the home’s early owners, Cornelius Berrien Mitchell, founded the Washington Square Association out of the townhouse in 1906, “to maintain and improve the character and culture of the Washington Square neighborhood.”
