At least 16 people have been killed in shootings in Lewiston, Maine, with that number expected to rise, two law enforcement officials tell The Associated Press.
The officials said multiple people had also been wounded. Investigators were still processing the crime scenes and working to gather evidence after a man opened fire at a bar and a bowling alley on Wednesday.
The gunman remains at large as authorities have ordered residents and business owners to stay inside and off the streets.
Lewiston police said in an earlier Facebook post that they were dealing with an active shooter at Schemengees Bar and Grille and Sparetime Recreation, a bowling alley.
"Please stay off the roads to allow emergency responders access to the hospitals," police said.
Lewiston is the second-largest city in Maine, according to its municipal website. It's located about 50 kilometres from the state capital of Augusta.
