KUALA LUMPUR: The positions of PAS president, deputy president and three vice-presidents will not be contested in the party’s elections next month.
PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said there have been no new nominations for the top five posts, and elections will only be held for its central committee.
“Only the current president and deputy president have been nominated, so they will retain their positions,” Takiyuddin told a press conference at the party’s headquarters today.
“Four nominations for the three vice-president’s posts were received. The Kedah menteri besar (Sanusi Nor) was nominated but he withdrew. So, there is no competition, and the vice-presidential line-up will be retained.”
PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang and deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man were also unchallenged in the party elections held in Terengganu two years ago.
Hadi became party president in 2002 following the death of his predecessor Fadzil Noor, while Tuan Ibrahim has been the party’s number two since 2015.
On Wednesday, Sanusi said it was likely that Hadi would retain his position unopposed. He added that he was not ready to become one of the party’s vice-presidents and would be happy just to be a PAS central committee member.
The party’s general assembly will take place at the IDCC Shah Alam for three days, beginning Oct 20.
At the press conference, Takiyuddin also said PAS needs to elect a total of 18 members to its central committee.
“We have received the nominations for the central committee and will finalise them later,” he said.
