Govt returning assets thanks to Tabung Haji’s restructuring, says Na’im

In 2018, Tabung Haji transferred assets valued at nearly RM19.9 billion to a finance ministry special purpose vehicle to consolidate its financial position.

PETALING JAYA: The government’s decision to return the assets of Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) follows the successful restructuring and recovery plan implemented by the pilgrim fund, says religious affairs minister Na’im Mokhtar.

He said the decision was also made considering the current financial capability and stability of TH.

“TH will hold official discussions with the finance ministry on the steps that should be taken to retrieve its assets,” Na’im said in a statement.

“The religious affairs ministry will continue to elevate TH through integrity and professionalism in an effort to safeguard the interests of all Muslims and depositors.”

On Dec 11, 2018, TH transferred assets valued at nearly RM19.9 billion to a finance ministry special purpose vehicle (SPV) to consolidate its financial position.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced that all the assets that were handed over to the SPV would be returned to TH.

Anwar, who is also the finance minister, said the decision was taken following the “recovery” of TH, which is now “well managed”.

He added that returning the assets would also dismiss claims made previously that they had been sold.

Mujahid had accused Dusuki of telling “lies and slander” for claiming that TH’s assets had been sold to non-Muslims.
