A day after Pope Francis’ surgery, the Director of the Holy See Press Office gave three notifications to the media.
In the first, which was very brief, he said the Holy Father “spent the night well.” At around midday, on Thursday, June 8, fuller information was given.
“The medical staff, which is following the Pontiff’s postoperative aftermath, informed that the Pope spent a calm night and was able to rest for a long time. He is in a good general physical state, alert and breathing spontaneously. The routine control tests are good. He will have the necessary postoperative rest the whole day. The Pope is being informed of the messages of closeness and affection, which have arrived in the last hours and expressed his gratitude, while at the same time asking that they continue praying for him.”
A third reference arrived just after 7:00 pm Rome time, stating that “His Holiness, Pope Francis, spent a day of rest.”
“The medical staff, which is following the Pontiff’s postoperative aftermath, informed that he is being fed with a water diet. His hemodynamic and respiratory parameters are stable. The postoperative course seems regular.” On the afternoon of Thursday, feast of Corpus Christi, the Pope received the Eucharist.
Among the many messages of closeness, the Holy Father was moved by the affection of the family of little Michelangelo, whom Pope Francis baptized on March 31 of this year, during his visit to the Hospital’s Paediatric Oncology and Neurosurgery wards, who sent him a card-letter wishing him a speedy recovery.
The Holy Father wished to thank the mother personally with a brief phone call.
