Matthew McConaughey: Fortune teller told me to do ‘How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days’

“How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” changed the trajectory of Matthew McConaughey’s career — and he has a fortune teller to thank for that.

The 53-year-old recently told Vanity Fair that he was debating whether or not to join the 2003 rom-com when he got a sign from the universe.

“I remember considering whether I was going to do it or not one night while on a walk down Sunset Boulevard,” the actor recalled. “Suddenly, this guy comes up out of nowhere to me — he was a fortune teller guru [and] goes, ‘Can I tell you your fortune real quick?’

He continued, “I was like, ‘Yeah, man. Sure.’ He immediately goes, ‘There’s a movie you’re considering right now. It’s a romantic comedy. You have to do this or it will be one of the biggest regrets of your life. It is going to be a blast, it is going to be an incredible experience and it is going to make a bunch of money.'”

While McConaughey initially thought the “studio hired” the mystery man to sway his decision, the advice stuck with him.

“I laughed at the thought, but I also remember taking a more serious consideration,” the Oscar winner said. “I think I even accepted the offer the next day.”

However, it isn’t just the fortune teller we have to thank for McConaughey’s iconic performance.

According to Kate Hudson, Gwyneth Paltrow was originally slated to play the role of Andie Anderson.

Yet after things fell through and Hudson accepted the gig, she was the one who suggested McConaughey should play Benjamin Barry.

“We were looking at guys and kept going back and forth about who would be the right guy. The guy for me was really important. Matthew came up in a meeting and I thought that was a great idea. I loved his energy. We immediately just got along,” the 43-year-old divulged.

Although Hudson said there is “nothing in the works” when it comes to a potential sequel, next week marks the 20th anniversary of the film’s release.

So, while we might not get a look at second look at Hudson in that yellow silk dress, there’s always Netflix — or is there?
