Sanwo-Olu didn’t ban us from arresting erring motorists – LASTMA

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) debunked the “recurring fake news” purportedly made by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

“No LASTMA official should arrest any motorist, either commercial or private. The duty of LASTMA is to manage traffic and not to arrest,” he allegedly cautioned.

Public Affairs Director Adebayo Taofiq recalled the General Manager, Bolaji Oreagba debunked the claim that the agency was banned from arresting motorists who flout the Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018.

In a statement on Friday, Oreagba said the handiwork of “faceless mischief makers” has been repeatedly circulated online since February 2020 despite several rebuttals.

The GM warned Lagosians, especially motorists, to be wary of online reports aimed at causing chaos and mischief within the society.

“I wonder why some individuals choose to always mislead others to contravene the traffic law as amended by the State House of Assembly in 2018”, he noted.

The General Manager informed the public that the agency had the responsibility to uphold and enforce the traffic laws at all times.

He said LASTMA will not hesitate to enforce those laws whenever violated as they seek to transform the transportation system to ensure free flow of traffic and reduce accidents.

“The public is advised to disregard all fake news circulated by faceless individuals and designed to lead them into breaking the traffic law”, Oreagba added.

LASTMA is equipping traffic management personnel with new hand-held Traffic Management Solution (TMS) devices that capture real-time traffic violations, the statement announced.
