The former Assistant Controller General of Immigration (Retd.), Segun Adegoke, on Friday, challenged Nigerians, especially youths to always demand responsible leadership in government and display the courage to resist corrupt leadership.

He made this known in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital while delivering a lecture titled, “Illegal Migration: The Nigerian Plight”, organized by the Department of Mass Communication, Dominican University, Samonda, Ibadan.

Adegoke said government at all levels must introduce measures to win the war against illegal migration and restore the lost faith and trust of the Nigerian youths in the country.

The former ACG of immigration said, “Government at all levels must design economic policies that will ensure economic and social wellbeing of Nigerian citizens. Nigerian citizens must demand responsible leadership in government and display uncanny courage to resist corrupt leadership.

“The educational sector should be strengthened to include entrepreneurship for all-round education to ensure that graduates of our institutions are well equipped to take up entrepreneurship.

“The issue of irregular immigration has become a global concern. But then, in our present situation, the institutional framework has been established to counter emerging security challenges. Hence, there is a need for more synergy among security agencies to work as a team.

“To resolve the issues of brain drain, the government should increase the production capacity, so that even when these foreign countries recruit Nigerian doctors, nurses, and other health workers, it will be an added advantage to our country,” he urged.

Earlier, the Head of Mass Communication Department, Andu Okwilagwe, also advised the Federal Government to find a way of encouraging youths in a more legitimate way to travel abroad instead of through the desert and the Mediterranean Sea.

He said, “The government should find a way for the youths to move to other places. Nigerians hardly stay in any person’s place. They will go there to learn, work and go back home to show off that they have made it. In fact, Nigerians are unique human beings.”

Dignitaries at the event included the state Controller of Immigration, Mohammed Umar, and the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Hyginus Ekwuazi.
