Since the Taliban took over in 2021, tens of thousands of Afghans have fled to Pakistan, joining the several million Afghan refugees and migrants living there for decades.

Meanwhile, Afghan citizens complain that hundreds have been unlawfully arrested. The mass arrests have fueled fears that Pakistan is waging a new crackdown against the millions of Afghan refugees.

According to Islamabad, 250,000 Afghans have entered Pakistan since January 2021, the majority of them arriving when the Taliban took control in August. Most of them are professionals with college degrees who want to relocate abroad.
